Equipment we use

We use a variety of special equipment as well as personal observations to try to dispel or prove what others have experienced. Our goal is to help people and to prove that ghosts do exist.
We do not trap or get rid of ghosts or spirits.
We simply try to understand the phenomenon, though many situations will remain unexplained, for this is not an exact science.

FLIR Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging allows you to see heat sources in total darkness. This can reveal either natural or unnatural sources in your paranormal research. Thermal imaging allows you to see in to a whole range of imaging beyond what the human eye can perceive.

Ovilus

The revolutionary Ghost Box Ovilus III converts environmental readings into real words. Now you can get real words and phonetic responses to your questions. Theories suggest that spirits and other paranormal entities may be able to alter our environment such as electromagnet frequencies, temperature, etc. The Ovilous III takes advantage of this by using these frequencies to choose a response from a preset database of over 2,000 words. The idea behind this, is that an intelligent entity will be able to alter the environment in such a way that forces the Ovilus to "speak" an appropriate response.

Structured light sensor camera

SLS stands for ‘Structured Light Sensor’. SLS is a scanning camera that will capture and understand the environment. The Xcam SLS is based around an advanced SLS as well as additional sensor inputs. All of the data is gathered and displayed in real time. The connected PC based tablet collects all the data into one central point for simple viewing and recording. One single screen shows all your data: Temperature, Imaging, Audio Range, Distance, Light Levels and Visualized Object Scanning.

EMF (Electromagnetic Field Gauss Meter)

This small hand-held item measures electromagnetic fields and electrical currents. High energy is what a haunting consists of. The gadget pinpoints the location of this energy, though one must be aware of other possibilities such as electrical currents emitted by small and large appliances and wiring and electrical boxes. Currently we use two difference types of these meters

Thermometer

Sudden temperature changes are believed to be due to the spirit taking all the heat from an area and using this energy to manifest itself. An apparatus to read the air temperature helps to narrow down the site of a possible poltergeist and verifies what the investigator has felt. GRIPS uses both a stationary as well as a couple of different hand held gauges.

Walkie-Talkies

Communication is important for both safety and reporting findings to all investigators at a location. Walkie-talkies are wonderful when groups are separated by floors or distance at a site.

DVR Cameras

These cameras are helpful when a site is large and investigators and need to cover a multitude of areas. They also come in handy when a location is more prone to a phenomenon happening when no one is there and the webcam becomes the eyes and ears of the investigator.

Cameras or Camcorders

GRIPS investigators are encouraged to bring their own cameras, camcorders or VHS equipment, the thought being that a larger variety of these devices will increase the chances of catching something on film or disk. We use both digital and 35 mm cameras, even disposable are good in the hunt for proof. Black and white works just as well as color film, with a traditional camera faster film speed is best to capture fast moving objects like orbs, strobes, and ectoplasm.

EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena)

A digital voice recorder is used to try to record a spirit’s attempts to communicate. A voice activated recorder is probably the best to use, due to the fact it condenses the amount of recordings to be reviewed. Most investigators will ask leading questions where a phenomenon is thought to be and pause patiently hoping the ghost will answer.

Compass

We use a simple hand-held compass. It measures magnetic and electromagnetic fields of which spirits are said to be made of. When the dial spins wildly and there is no explainable source a ghost may be near. It also works great if you get lost in the woods.

Dowsing Rods

Very low-tech equipment indeed. For centuries people used these simple metal rods to locate water buried hundreds of feet below the surface of the earth. The rods themselves can be made of a variety of metals and can range from a small pocket size of only four inches to more than twelve inches each. You caneven make a homemade set out of a coat hanger or order a professional set from Canada or England. The sets we currently have are of brass and are homemade. These rods detect high concentrations of energy and are capable of making the holder aware of water, treasure, or ghosts.

Flashlight

A must for every investigation done at night. Important safety device needed for all. We use a red lens to assist the eyes in adjusting to the dark quickly.

Watch

Noting the time of an occurrence is important to establish a base for any true investigation. Time is an essential element in many things, even ghosts keep a time table of sorts.

Notebook & pen

Investigators need to document all events and conditions related to a site of paranormal research. One should note who was present, the time, what was seen or felt by each researcher and what was registered by the various equipment and where.

Protection items

Each investigator may bring an amulet, religious symbol/ relic, charm, or stones that they feel offers protection from the unseen. A simple item that could make a world of difference in the confidence one feels when facing the unknown.
